How A Visit To The Beauty Shop Killed My Self Esteem
I have been wanting to go get my hair cut for a while. I had a trim a couple of months ago but when we got here to Houston I know I needed something different. Reading about Dr. Cara's adventures gave me a few pointers and was all the encouragement I needed to go out and get my hair cut.
I had not yet found a stylist here. Being new to town you know how long it can take to find someone who will meet you hair needs. Yes Guys. I know a haircut is a haircut to you but it's different with us gals. StudHombre and The Boy have their wigs chopped at the Lynnie Beauty Salon. Home to the $5 mens cut. yep. For 5 bucks you get a no frills haircut done by a very sweet asian gal who speaks a little english. Call me nutty but I didn't want to go the 5 dollar haircut route. It's not that I am a big old snob but for us women types our hair is a BIG deal. So I was on the search.....Do I go to the mall......do I go to the fancy salons........Do I find an independent salon......what to do?
It was then that I gave myself a mental slap. This was me. I once had a shaved head. I had hair down to my rear. I had a really bad perm in the 80's. I once had hair that was green, blue, blond, red, coke can red, black and purple. Albeit not at the same time. This was the girl who for a year went into a beauty school and would ask "Hey what are you studying this week? Let's do it!"
So why way I being so picky and anxious? With the exception of Chris's hair that went out for cigarettes in 1992 and never came back, hair grows and nothing that was done can't be undone right?
So I pulled into the first little salon I saw. Salon Express. I walked in and said " Do you all do walk-ins? I'd like my hair cut and I need my eyebrows waxed." And the very nice little Asian lady said "Yah, you sit here." Oh shit. Another 5 dollar hair cut salon. The conversation goes as follows:
*Be sure to insert the kikass Asian accent!*
Stylist: I do your eyebrow first! Let's see.....you have thick eyebrow. This your first time?
Aynde: No.
Stylist: Oh it just been LONG time.
Aynde: Yes. *oh snap! This is going to be rough on my self esteem!*
Stylist proceeds to to do brows and before she is finished she says:
Stylist: You want me do your lip?
Aynde: *laughs* No I don't have any hair on my lip.
Stylist: Oh yes you do! *grab 10x magnifying mirror* See?
Aynde: OMG I do! *mental tears are welling at the loss of self esteem points*
Stylist: See. You just not pay attention! I wax lip OK?
Aynde: Ok.
Now I am all groomed. Eyebrows look great. Lip...well she was right. :) Time for my haircut.
Stylist: What you want?
Aynde: I don't know. I need something different. What do you think?
Stylist: Oh hair you have now nice. Good for mature woman. Just need style. (I HAD to ask. stupid me!)
Aynde: Well I just moved here and It's very hot so I would like to go shorter and have it feel lighter.
Stylist: Okay but short not good for you. Too short hair look bad....on......face shape you know? (my fat head? go ahead say it)
Aynde: I see. well let's just cut it a little shorter and put in some layers.
Stylist: Okay. I take off 1 inch.
Aynde: Can we take two?
Stylist: Take 2 inches might be too short. I take 1 and a half.
Aynde: great!
So the stylist cuts. And cuts. And cuts. I see big piles of hair falling to the ground. I am beginning to sweat. She's cutting and cutting. Finally she says I am done. The result?
FABULOUS!!!! OMG I love it. I am not kidding. It's shorter but not too short. It's got lots of movement and she thinned out the hair so it feels so light! I couldn't be happier. Now here is the best part - Haircut and wax? 20 bucks. Self esteem chipped way for free. LOL!!
